REUTERS/StringerNEW DELHI, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Rescuers pulled out more bodies on Tuesday after landslides in India's Himayalas over the weekend buried homes and buildings, killing at least 57 people and leaving 10 still trapped or missing, officials said. The destruction from the landslides was severe in India's Himachal Pradesh, where structures were swept away under rocks and falling trees, roads had caved in, and power and the railway network disrupted. Two people also died in neighbouring Uttarakhand state in rain-related incidents. Heavy rain is forecast to continue until Wednesday in parts of Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand.

Heavy rains have killed a further seven people elsewhere in the state. Five people have been rescued but around 20 to 25 people remain trapped, with rescue efforts under way, he added. NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Torrential rain in India's Himalayas triggered landslides over the weekend that have killed over 50 people, with the death toll expected to rise as more than 20 remain trapped or missing, officials said on Monday. Television footage from India's Himachal Pradesh state showed houses flattened by landslides, buses and cars hanging on the edge of precipices after roads gave way, and hundreds of people at rescue sites as emergency workers struggled to clear debris. CNN —Flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rain in northern India have killed at least 41 people since the weekend, according to local authorities. Thirty-one people have died in Himachal Pradesh, the state’s Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu told reporters Tuesday, while a further 10 have died in neighboring Punjab, Revenue Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa told Indian news agency ANI. The Dalai Lama, who lives in Himachal Pradesh, said in a statement Tuesday that his trust will be also be donating to the rescue and relief efforts, but did not specify an amount. At least 22 people died in floods and landslides in the northern states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab on Sunday, the Times of India newspaper reported. In the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, flash floods over the weekend brought down a bridge and swept away several hutments. Many districts in Himachal Pradesh received a month’s rainfall in a day at the weekend, said a senior weather department official.

CNN —Heavy rains brought deadly floods to northern India on the weekend as the country’s capital marked its wettest July day in more than 40 years, according to authorities and local reports. The Indian Meteorological Department said New Delhi received 153 millimeters (6 inches) of rain on Sunday, making it the city’s wettest July day since 1982. On Sunday, the department issued red alerts, indicating the highest threat level, for the northern states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana. Landslide warnings were also issued for Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu asked residents Monday to stay home for the next 24 hours.
